The tippet feather

In order to use up the larger tippet feathers you can prepare and tie in a feather as follows. The trimmed piece of feather can be used in another fly.

Choose a piont on the feather stalk that equally splits the black barred fibres in two and draw back the lower half as shown.
Tie in at the same point with about four or five turns of thread, too many turns will not allow you to pull the feather through for the next stage.

Note: the feather extends well past the bend of the hook.

Holding the feather gently in place pull on the stem until the black bar at the tip lines up with the bend. At the same time try to keep the feather evenly spread across the top off the hook.
Trim off at the eye and the fly is now ready for the hackle.
